How Do I Play with My Cat?

Encouraging your cat to exercise through play is a great way to both keep your cat healthy and help to build the bond between you and your feline friend.

How much time should I spend playing with my cat?

Generally several, short 10-15 minute play sessions per day seem to work well, although you may need to start with even shorter sessions to build your cat’s interest.

Top tips for playing with your cat

  • Many cats find games which stimulate their strong, natural hunting instincts the most inviting. Try using toys they can chase or bat with their paws.
  • Only allow play under supervision and put all toys out of your cat’s reach at the end of each play session for their own safety and to maintain their interest for next time.
  • Encourage your cat to move around the house. Use cat shelving, ropes, trees and climbing poles to promote active behaviour and enrich your cat’s environment.
  • Space your cat’s water bowl, food bowl, litter trays, rest area and play area as far apart as possible in order to seize every opportunity to promote activity that you can.
