Giving medicine to your cat can be extremely difficult – many owners have struggled with giving pills and other medicine to their feline companions.
In this article we’ll look at some hints and tips that can make giving pills to your cat an easier task.
Bring an assistant
Perhaps the most useful thing to have when trying to give medicine to your cat is someone to help you. An extra person can wrap your cat in a towel or blanket, helping both to calm the cat and to keep it in place – don’t wrap it too tightly, just enough to keep it in place.
Feeding the pill
Once the cat is wrapped and secure, use one hand to hold the around the top of the cat’s head. Make sure your fingers come down to the top of your cat’s mouth so you can hold this in place.
With your other hand, open your cat’s mouth and put the pill or medicine inside. Then close your cat’s mouth.
Helping the medicine go down
Rub the bottom of your cats head to encourage him or her to swallow the medicine.
It’s also advised that you provide your cat with food or water immediately after giving the pill in order to help him or her swallow.
This can also avoid your cat considering this to be an entirely negative experience. Giving your cat plenty of fuss afterwards can also help with this!
Talk to your vet
If you are still struggling, it is also important that you speak to your vet about any difficulties in giving your cat its tablet.
It’s a common problem and your vet is likely to be able to help. They may even be able to offer you alternative solutions, like liquids and long-lasting injections.
