If your cat hasn’t been neutered, and you don’t want her having a litter of kittens, then knowing when she is in heat can be extremely important. In this article we’ll look at some of the signs that might help you to tell when your cat is in season.

How do I know if my cat is in heat?

  • Look at how your cat is carrying her tail, particularly if you are petting her. If she is holding her tail upright or off to one side, this could be a sign she is ready to mate.
  • A common sign of a cat being in heat is ‘calling’ – this is where your cat becomes increasingly vocal as she calls for a mate.
  • Your cat may take to rolling on the floor to spread her scent. She may do this while also calling.
  • You might see your cat assuming a position where she lies belly down on the floor with her hindquarters in the air.
  • An increased desire for attention and affection is common when cats are in heat.
  • When your cat is in heat, her genitalia become swollen. As a result, you may see her spending a considerable amount of time washing this area.
  • Your cat will be looking for opportunities to get outside to find a mate.
